Kripalu Yoga
Kripalu yoga is a somewhat spontaneous, flowing, and meditation based style of yoga. Before class begins, the kripalu yoga instructor will typically start with meditation and centering exercises, controlled breathing, and warm up stretching. These movements and activities are designed to warm up the body and prepare the student for the guided posture flows and relaxation exercises that will be done in the class.
Kripalu yoga classes begin stage one, which encompasses poses and postural alignments, coupled with breathing controlled movements. In stage one of kripalu yoga, poses are held for short periods of time. When the student becomes proficient in stage one poses, they progress to the second stage. Stage two entails similar practices, but the poses are held for longer periods of time. The third and final stage changes from slow, flowing movements to spontaneous, self-guided movements. Kripalu yoga involves a fluid progression of poses and meditation, but also allows for some individualized dynamics.
Kripalu Yoga is an integration of the body, mind and energy. The human body contains an energy, or prana. According to Hindu beliefs, this energy can be blocked or disturbed, resulting in physical, mental, and emotional imbalance. These imbalances can lead to a number of afflictions, including mental health problems or physical diseases.
Yoga engages the muscular-skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, immune and nervous systems. Kripalu Yoga utilizes the student's body as a channel for gaining access to the student's spirit. Kripalu yoga can profoundly affect the body, mind, and emotions. When mental and emotional imbalances are repaired, prana is released, and in turn promotes physical healing. Kripalu yoga is a very in depth form of yoga. In conjunction with medical healing practices, Kripalu yoga can bring about much greater healing than medical practices alone.
Kripalu Yoga is also a vehicle for personal growth and self-empowerment. Kripalu yoga equips students with the ability to tap into their own inner strength instead of depending on guidance from external sources. Through the mastery of this inner strength, students are able to receive the opinions, advice, and ideas of others without sacrificing their own powers of reason, and ability to make their own decisions.
The practice of kripalu yoga also establishes a strong, intimate, nurturing relationship between the student and their physical body. In kripalu yoga, the body is seen as the temple in which the student invokes the manifestation of divine presence. These practices take the students to new physical and spiritual depths.
