Kundilani Yoga
Kundalini refers to the untapped energy (known as prana) that is believed to reside at the base of the spine. This prana energy can be drawn throughout the body to awaken the seven chakras. Chakras, are believed to be centers of activity that receive, assimilate, and express life force energy. The word chakra is a Sanskrit word that literally translates as wheel or disk and refers to bio-energetic activity exuding from the spine.
Each of the chakras is directly correlated to certain areas of the body:
- Muladhara also known as the Base or Root Chakra is related to the ovaries or prostate areas
- Swadhisthana is the Sacral Chakra, which is associated with the coccyx – the last bone in the spinal cord
- Manipura is the Solar Plexus Chakra, and deals with the stomach and naval area
- Anahata is the Heart Chakra, which is connected to the heart area
- Vishuddha is the Throat Chakra, which is linked to the throat and neck
- Ajna is known as the Brow or Third Eye Chakra, and is related to the pineal gland or "third eye"
- Sahasrara, or the Crown Chakra is associated with the top of the head and the 'soft spot' of newborn babies
Kundalie is untapped energy, also referred to as prana, residing at the base of the spine. Kundalini is typically pictured as a snake coiled at the base of the spine. This energy is drawn up through the chakras and eventually reaches the Crown chakra, only then can full enlightenment occur.
Kundalini yoga is a style of yoga that combines chanting of mantras, meditating, visualization, and "guided" relaxation. The main focuses of Kundalini Yoga include healing and purifying the mind and body, as well as providing emotional support.
Kundalini yoga consists of poses combined with controlled breathing, hand and finger positioning, mantra chanting, visualization and meditation. Students perform specific poses along with sounds, chants, and breathing exercises that serve to activate different parts of the body and the brain to produce specific results. For example, Kundalini yoga has been proven to assist in overcoming addictions. The breathing exercises and poses naturally release endorphins within the body, which helps addicts feel a natural high.
Each series of Kundalini Yoga poses is combined with a specific breathing technique that deepens the effects of each pose. These Kundali poses release the untapped kundali energy, allowing the energy to move upward through the chakras. Kundali yoga is a challenging form of yoga and provides a mental as well as a physical workout.
