Sivinanda Yoga?
Sivananda Yoga encompasses a series of 12 poses, along with Sun Salutations, proper breathing exercises, techniques for complete relaxation, and different types of mantra chanting. These activities are the foundation of the practice of Sivananda yoga. The philosophy of the Sivananda yoga method is based on the following five basic values:
- Proper breathing techniques, known as Prāṇāyāma
- Using relaxation techniques known as Savasana
- Eating only a strictly vegetarian diet
- Meditation, referred to as Dhyana along with positive thinking, which is called Vedanta
- Proper exercise based on twelve specific Asana yoga poses
A typical Sivananda class includes pranayama, or the art of controlled breathing, and is slowly paced, to allow each student to fully explore and experience each pose, in order to fully reap the benefits offered by each specific pose. After warming up with sun salutations, which are a series of yoga poses that are typically performed at the beginning of most yoga classes, the remainder of the class characteristically will focus on mastering the twelve basic yoga poses. Those twelve basic poses are: the headstand, the shoulder stand, the plow, the fish, the seated forward bend, the cobra, the locust, the bow, the seated spinal twist, the crow, the standing forward bend, and the triangle.
